When you're new to sobriety, or any recovery really, you are told to fake it till you make it. Essentially what you’re being told is, have an optimistic attitude and that the only way to get to the other side of something (my addiction) is through it. Well, I have found the same goes for affirmations. They seem like bullshit at first. In fact, every time I start a new affirmation, I don't believe in what it says the slightest. In the past, I would never take the trial of using affirmations past a couple of days. Insert oils and it's a whole new ballgame for me. Let me tell you how and why.
A little Science for you:
"Did you know that our sense of smell is the only sense directly tied to the limbic area of the brain, which is considered the emotional control center? This means that when essential oils are inhaled, they go directly to the brain. Our other four senses — taste, sight, touch and hearing — are first routed through the thalamus before reaching designated areas of the brain. Because the limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, therapeutic-grade essential oils can have unbelievable physiological and psychological effects. Each of the essential oils has therapeutic stimulating, calming, sedative, balancing properties. When we inhale an essential oil molecule, it travels through the nasal passage to a receptor neuron that transports it up to the limbic brain, especially the hypothalamus. The limbic center in your brain is responsible for controlling all the physical, psychological, and emotional responses that your body performs based on stimulus coming from the outside. Thus, the ability of essential oils to target your limbic center, make them a powerful tool in treating many health ailments".
Heidi Ross, my Diamond with YL, is the one that really opened my eyes up to affirmations back in January. In a place of feeling that I wanted more out of life in terms of self-growth and in my recovery, I had nothing to lose. I took her affirmation challenge with Young Living's Abundance Oil and it was the beginning of my internal transformation. Heide teaches that your conscious mind is only 10% and your subconscious is 90%. That is why saying the affirmations out-loud is so important. When you keep saying the affirmation over and over and over (energizer bunny status), you end up feeding that subconscious mind. She went over some notes of her own with us:
Your conscious mind is:
-> Your will power
-> Your long-term memory
-> Critical Thinking
-> & Logical thinking
Your subconscious mind is:
-> Your beliefs
-> Your emotions
-> Your habits
-> & Imagination
Therefore, when you combine the work of both minds with the affirmation said out-loud your subconscious and conscious mind both take it in and believe it to be true because they can't differentiate reality from fantasy. This is why we laugh, cry or get mad at characters on television or movies. The thing is, Heinz Kohut, the grandfather of psychology of the Self, notes that, "if an unwholesome belief is deeply rooted in our unconscious mind then it has the ability to override a positive affirmation even if we aren’t aware of it". So by saying the affirmation out-loud, our logic mind starts retraining our belief system.
What's that all mean? I'll give you a couple renditions. This is how I dumb it down for myself. When I breathe in an oil while saying the affirmation out-loud, seven times, once in the morning and once at night, I connect that affirmation to the emotional control center. The same center that tells me, "you are not enough", "you can't do this", "you will fail", "they'll think of you, if you ." In my eyes, these new thoughts (the affirmation) are shoving my old ways of thinking out of that emotional control center. What's that look like after of doing affirmations on repeat? A positive mindset. A new way of thinking. You need to fake it till you make it. AKA, keep saying them and saying them. I promise you, you will wake up one day and feel the shift. Slowly, but surely.
I put "out-loud" in bold because I think that is key in affirmation work. You need the universe to hear you changing your mind set so you can attract what you manifest. I know it sounds like hocus pocus, but I'm living and breathing, standing here telling you that it works, so- so what if it is! It's not weird if it works, and it does. What's even crazier, is that I believe when I smell a hint of the particular oil that I did a particular affirmation with, my brain subconsciously gets a boost or refill of that affirmation- a free refuel. This is why affirmations are so important. They set us up for success prior to doing them, after doing them, and even subconsciously.
The cards pictured here were a gift from Heidi. You hold them out face down, and pick the one that speaks to you and associate it with the oil on the card. For me, I'll be doing the same one weekly, or possibly monthly, until I've engraved it in my brain. Other's might choose to do a new one every morning and every night. There's no right or wrong way as long as you keep the basics consistent: say it out-loud, repeat, breathe in the scent and send those thoughts to the emotional control center.
If you'd like a deck, you can find them here. No, I do not get any monetary value for referring you to them.
